Traveling Festivals: Australia Music Fests 2012 & 2013 Preview!

When it comes to touring music festivals, Australia offers more than any other country in the world. Hey, if an artist is going to fly halfway across the world to play one show, they may as well play five. Traveling fests tend to be single day in each location and the lineup remains fairly consistent from city to city. Here’s the rundown on some of the most popular shows on the continent.

1. Stereosonic

Dates: November 24-December 2, 2012
Cities: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane
Headliners: Tiesto, Avicii, Laidback Luke, Carl Cox, Example, Calvin Harris

The traveling EDM festival made history in 2011 as the biggest Aussie festival ever held in Sydney. This year, expect new stages, even bigger crowds, and the largest line-up yet.

2. Big Day Out

Dates: January 18-28, 2012
Cities: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Gold Coast
Headliners: Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Killers, Vampire Weekend, Band of Horses, Animal Collective, Kaskade, The Bloody Beetroots

The traveling tour that started it all in Australia, Big Day Out has been on the road since 1992. You don’t survive more than twenty years in the festival business without putting on an solid show and BDO will deliver again with huge healdiners and a stacked lineup.

3. Parklife

Dates: September 29-October 7, 2012
Cities: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane
Headliners: Passion Pit, The Presets, Plan B, Justice (DJ Set), Rusko

Founded in 2000 as a small party, Parklife has been raging now for over ten years. With a tagline that reads “Hibernation Ends Here”, Parklife aims to bring Australians straight into summer with a dance heavy lineup.

4. Soundwave Festival

Dates: February 23-March 4, 2013
Cities: Sydney, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane
Headliners: Metallica, Linkin Park, Blink 182, The Offspring, Slayer, Garbage, Cypress Hill

The undisputed hardest rocking traveling tour in Australia this year is Soundwave. Just the Metallica/Slayer/Anthrax triumvarite would be enought to bring out the metal faithful which probably explains why Soundwave is already sold out in four cities.

5. Summadayze

Dates: January 2013
Cities: Gold Coast, Perth, Melbourne, Adelaide
Headliners: The Chemical Brothers, M.I.A., Knife Party, Kimbra

Your 2013 resolution should be to get your ass to Australia and celebrate New Year’s Eve with Summadayze — then follow the tour through their next three stops like your’re part of the show. Damn. That sounds like a great idea. Might have to steal it for ourselves.

Born during a sweaty, backstage, Bonnaroo downpour, the editor-in-chief's mission in life is to dance, write, and travel to every great festival that this wide world has to offer. While his identity remains a mystery, you may have already met him, probably when he helped himself to your party favors.
