Fantastic first day at Lolla. I crashed just as the gates opened, the weather was ideal, there were too many good bands to see and I didn’t end up regretting any of the conflict choices. For me, the first stand-out performance of the day came from new-wave legends Devo, who are still very much alive and kicking. Their live show was intense and exciting, and came with herky-jerky dancing, artsy projections on a screen, and lots of matching uniforms. The energy ran high throughout the set, while fans–including many sporting plastic Devo hats–danced and jumped and sang along to their songs. [Read the rest of the review…]

Rounding out Indiepalooza was Grammy-award winning group Phoenix on the Budweiser stage, who, like others before it, said the crowd was the biggest they’d ever played for. The French group provided a dance-y, energetic end to the day with “Lisztomania” and older tracks “Long Distance Call” and “Everything is Everything.” Happy feet all around, one guy couldn’t help but admit “Fences” was “as good as apple butter!” [Read the rest of the review…]

It was another full day of Lollapalooza hijinks, but knowing that the rain was going to turn to sun, and that sun was going to turn the afternoon into a sweltering scorcher, I took the last day of the fest at a syrupy Sunday pace. Sort of. I still had a lot of ground to cover and somehow managed to string together a great run of music that culminated with a circle of close friends jumping up and down, singing and dancing as Arcade Fire closed out three days of sunblock, people watching, Budweiser tall boys, lobster corn dogs and a bazillion unbelievable live performances.
The Walkmen with their Dylan-esque indie rock hit the adidas MEGA stage after B.O.B. While Voodoo Fest in New Orleans has two main stages close together, and Bonnaroo allows for a lot of room surrounding each stage, Lollapalooza felt a bit crammed – with more stages than the previously mentioned fests and tighter crowd areas.
