Music festivals have popped up all over New York City, including the first year Catalpa Music Festival which celebrated its debut this past weekend. Taking place on Randall’s Island, Catalpa unveiled a genre pleasing lineup mixed with rain showers. How did it turn out? Check out some of the reviews below.

It was a weekend filled with (mostly) good music, good food, and rampant product placement at the first annual Catalpa Music Festival on New York City’s Randall’s Island, where three stages, dozens of funnel cakes, and one stand of mellowed-out, glass-blowin’ “tobacco” bowl makers delivered the laid-back vibe that has come to characterize the summer music festival.

Look at me being a responsible reporter and arriving at the festival early. Everyone at Big Pink is waiting to hear “Dominos” which turns out to be the least engaging song live. Rather than be intimidated by the early set time these guys own the stage like they’re headlining Glastonbury. They earn bonus points for the female drummer.

Music festivals without a historical following or a known brand identity can employ many strategies in their inaugural year, one of which is “Appeal to as many prospective demographics as possible.” Catalpa NYC, which debuted this weekend at Randall’s Island, decided to combat this problem by throwing together a bunch of popular-ish acts and some quirky attractions–art, fire, a chance to “elope” with a fellow Snoop Dogg fan.
